Objectives and Working Plan

General Objective 1 (Grid-scale Analysis)

Disentangling the contributions of the deficit of moisture transport from major sources and the contributions of high anomalous temperatures partitioned by atmospheric processes to the occurrence and development of droughts and combined drought-heatwave events.

Three specific objectives are defined:

  • Specific objective 1.1 Estimation of the contributions of moisture transport deficit and temperature anomalies partitioned by atmospheric processes to the occurrence of dry and combined dry-hot events globally for the present climate.
  • Specific objective 1.2 Completion of an ensemble of high-resolution simulations of Lagrangian trajectories for future climate in the North Atlantic region, which permits the analysis of dry and combined dry-hot events in the European region.
  • Specific objective 1.3 Estimation of the contributions of moisture transport deficit and temperature anomalies partitioned by atmospheric processes to the occurrence of dry and combined dry-hot events for the European region for projected future climate.

General Objective 2 (Analysis of Major Episodes)

Unravelling the anomalous moisture and heat sources of major droughts and combined drought and heatwave events (CDHEs) in the current and projected future climate for the European region.

Three specific objectives are defined:

  • Specific objective 2.1: Identification of major drought events and CDHEs
  • Specific-objective 2.2: Determination of the sources of moisture and process-related temperature excesses for major drought events and CDHEs on a global scale in the present climate.
  • Specific-objective 2.3: Analysis of changes in future climate for the European region of the moisture sources and temperature excesses particionated by physical processes for drought and CDHEs conditions.
