Unidad Asociada de I+D+I al CSIC "GRUPO DE FÍSICA DE LA ATMÓSFERA Y DEL OCÉANO” de la UNIVERSIDADE DE VIGO

Since its creation in 2009, the Associated Unit has allowed pooling the climate analysis methodologies developed by the different research teams. In particular, it has been possible to work on the development of research related to the mechanisms that determine climate variability in different regions of the world.

The Associated Unit works on studying climate variability and change processes at different spatial and temporal scales, developing its activity on issues related to the processes that control atmospheric dynamics from a physical and meteorological perspective, incorporating advanced methods of physical modelling of the troposphere and stratosphere.

The Associated Unit aims to unite the geographical and physical approaches to the study of climate, in order not only to determine the spatial and temporal patterns of climate variability, change and extremes, but also to analyse their physical causes and links with the general dynamics of the atmosphere.

This will be achieved by combining the skills of all groups involved in the temporal and statistical analysis of extremes with physical models that will allow a deeper understanding of the atmospheric processes that cause them, and thus the development of better forecasting techniques. This also opens the door to identifying the factors involved in surface hydrological processes and the availability of water resources, and in the occurrence of climatic extremes such as heat waves, droughts and extreme precipitation. In fact, in addition to the analysis of droughts that we are currently working on, we will study in depth the atmospheric factors that determine the occurrence of extreme precipitation events, including meteorological models and possible patterns of future change.

Another line of work is the analysis of the mechanisms that determine changes in atmospheric humidity on a global scale and their relationship with the occurrence of droughts, an aspect in which the drought indicators developed by the CSIC and the Lagrangian models developed by the University of Vigo are combined.

The Associated Unit is part of the Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform on Climate and Climate Services PTI+Clima.
